The Kavery Engineering College follows a systematic and eco-friendly waste management system to maintain a clean, healthy, and sustainable campus environment. The institution adopts various methods for handling biodegradable, non-biodegradable, food, sanitary, sewage, and e-waste through segregation, recycling, composting, biogas production, and scientific disposal practices.

With dedicated waste bins, composting facilities, a biogas plant, sanitary napkin incinerators, and a sewage treatment plant, the college promotes responsible waste disposal and environmental awareness among students and staff. The institution also encourages the reduction, reuse, and recycling of waste materials as part of its green campus initiative.

Solid Waste Segregation

Biodegradable and non-biodegradable wastes are collected separately through properly placed waste bins across the campus.

Composting & Vermicompost

Biodegradable waste is processed through composting and vermicompost methods to produce natural manure for campus gardening.

Biogas & Incineration

Food and organic waste are utilized in biogas production, while sanitary waste is disposed of safely through incineration facilities.

Recycling & Sustainable Disposal

Plastic, metal, glass, and electronic waste are managed through recycling, reuse, safe storage, and authorized disposal methods.

Solid Waste Management

Bio-Degradable Solid Waste
  • More than 60 waste bins are placed across the campus for the collection of biodegradable solid waste generated from different sources.
  • Waste management at TKEC is carried out through reduction, reuse, recycling, composting, and controlled disposal methods.
  • Biodegradable waste such as food waste, canteen waste, human waste, paper waste, and related organic materials are collected separately.
  • The non-toxic biodegradable waste is processed through the Vermicompost method using pits constructed within the campus.
  • The composting process converts biodegradable waste into useful manure, which is later used for campus gardening and landscaping.
Non-Biodegradable Solid Waste
  • Non-biodegradable waste is collected and stored separately in designated areas within the campus.
  • The college has tied up with local vendors for the safe disposal and recycling of non-degradable waste materials.
  • Plastic, tins, metals, glass bottles, and similar waste are segregated and sent for proper recycling or disposal.
  • The institution regularly conducts awareness and training sessions on proper waste disposal and reducing the use of plastic products.
  • Students and staff are encouraged to use eco-friendly alternatives such as glass and metal utensils wherever possible.

Degradable & Non-Degradable Waste Bins

  • Sufficient numbers of waste bins are installed throughout the campus for the proper disposal of degradable and non-degradable waste.
  • Biodegradable waste includes food waste, canteen waste, human waste, paper waste, and other organic materials.
  • Non-biodegradable waste includes plastics, tins, metals, and glass bottles.
  • Separate waste bins are placed in classrooms, laboratories, canteen, kitchen, washrooms, and corridors for effective segregation.

Garbage Collection & Disposal

  • Waste collected from campus bins is regularly shifted to collection trolleys by housekeeping staff.
  • The collected waste is transported to designated processing areas located away from the academic blocks.
  • The institution ensures regular waste clearance to maintain cleanliness and hygiene throughout the campus.

Biogas Plant

  • A biogas plant is available on campus where biomass is fermented to generate biogas.
  • Organic input materials such as food waste, manure, and dung are fed into the plant for gas generation.
  • The generated biogas is used for cooking purposes, while the residue is converted into bio-fertilizer for agricultural and gardening use.

Food Waste Collection

  • Food waste collected from hostels, guest houses, and the canteen is provided to nearby pig and poultry farms.
  • Additional biodegradable food waste is converted into fertilizer through composting technology within the campus.

Awareness on Food Waste & Water Conservation

  • Awareness quotations and messages are displayed across the campus to reduce food waste and promote responsible consumption.
  • Signboards are also installed to encourage efficient water usage and reduce unnecessary wastage of water.
  • These initiatives help create awareness among students and staff about sustainable daily practices.

Sanitary Napkin Incinerator

  • Sanitary napkin incinerators are installed within the campus to ensure safe and hygienic disposal of sanitary waste.
  • This in-house disposal facility promotes hygiene, privacy, and cleanliness in women’s hostel and campus facilities.

Sewage Treatment Plant

  • The campus has a Sewage Treatment Plant (STP) located near the gents hostel, which also processes institutional liquid waste.
  • The treated water is reused for watering gardens, lawns, and green areas maintained inside the campus.
  • The sludge collected in the STP is dried and used as manure for garden maintenance.

E-Waste Management

  • Electronic devices are put to optimum use through repair and maintenance by technical assistants wherever possible.
  • Non-repairable e-waste such as old computers, monitors, printers, scanners, CDs, servers, and batteries are either reused for demonstration purposes or stored safely for disposal.
  • Obsolete e-waste is sold as scrap through proper channels at the end of the academic year.
  • Students are encouraged to reuse e-waste components for academic projects and model making.
  • Cloud storage is promoted to reduce the use of CDs, DVDs, and pen drives.
